Florence Welch-Scored ‘Gatsby’ musical Set for World Premiere

The dog days of summer have just begun with a new musical hitting the scene. Florence Welch and Thomas Bartlett have scored the upcoming musical for The Great Gatsby. The musical adaptation will premiere at American Repertory Theater next year.  We’ve got you covered on the full scoop, and a little refresher on The Great Gatsby if it’s been awhile since you read the novel.

The Run Down on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, originally published in 1925, has long been hailed by literary critics and English teachers alike as one of archetypal Great American Novels.

The Great Gatsby follows Nick Carraway and his interactions with mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his obsession to reunite with former lover Daisy Buchanan. Later, in 2013, Baz Luhrmann directed the movie adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey McGuire. In fact, Florence Welch appeared on the original soundtrack with her song Over the Love.

Florence Welch and Thomas Bartlett Team Up to score Gatsby

Florence Welch is breathing new life into F. Scott Fitzgerald’s legendary novel The Great Gatsby with her score for the upcoming musical. Welch is best known as the frontwoman of the indie rock band Florence + The Machine. Some may also recognize her music in productions as different as Jennifer’s Body, The Huntsman, Beauty and the Beast, and even 2011 video game Dragon Age 2.

For Gatsby, Welch has teamed up with Oscar and Grammy Award nominee Thomas Bartlett. Some may know the American pianist, producer, and singer best by his stagename: Doveman. As a producer, Bartlett has worked with a range of notable artists, including Yoko Ono, St. Vincent, Norah Jones, and many others. Most notably, he worked with Sufjan Stevens for the soundtrack for Call Me By Your Name.

Moreover, with these two collaborating, Gatsby is sure to have a dreamy and powerful score pushing the story forward.

Gatsby Musical Features Big Names Behind the Scenes

While casting has yet to be announced, audiences are undoubtedly in good hands with the expert talent behind the scenes. The production is sure to delight fans with Tony Award-winning director Rachel Chavkin. For those who may need a refresher, Chavkin directed award winning musicals such as Hadestown and Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812. Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok has penned the book. Tony Award winner Sonya Tayeh of Moulin Rouge! fame will choreograph.
