As recently announced during their ninth anniversary live broadcast, Red Velvet’s highly-anticipated third full-length album has started the production process, and fans are already wondering—will the album encapsulate their “red” or “velvet” side? This one-of-a-kind duality of Red Velvet’s concept was also recently highlighted in their world tour “R to V,” which was about taking their audience on a journey through their bright, playful, and fun red side as well as their powerful, sultry, sexy, and confident velvet side. The tour’s reversible setlist asks audiences to consider which songs are red and which are velvet from the quintet’s discography. And as Red Velvet masterfully showed, it’s not quite as black and white or as red and velvet as it seems.

Here are five “red” Red Velvet songs that could easily fit into their “velvet” side.

“Time Slip”

When people think of R&B and Red Velvet, their velvet side always comes to mind. At first glance, their velvet side encapsulates slower R&B jams like their beloved “Bad Boy.” However, “Time Slip” challenges this narrative. Filled with heavenly harmonies over a hip hop R&B instrumental, the girls draw you in like sirens as they sing about staying in a dreamlike world of their own creation, which feels pretty reminiscent of their velvet side despite the initial bright nature of the song.

“Sassy Me”

Described as a pop dance song, “Sassy Me” exudes their red side. However, the lyrics and sexy vocalizations of the track tackle the more mature confidence that their velvet side is known for. The song encourages listeners to create their own destinies and trust in themselves that they’re cool and, well, sassy. It’s the equivalent of putting on your favorite red lipstick and leather jacket and taking over the world. And if that’s not velvet, what is?

“Beg For Me”

While sonically “Beg For Me” is upbeat enough for their red side, its powerful and confident vocals and choreography landed its rightful place on the velvet side of the group’s setlist during their world tour. Similar to “Time Slip,” this song challenges viewers to look past the general idea of their velvet concept and see how it mixes itself with their red side too.

“La Rouge”

With the translated title of this song being “The Red,” one would think that “La Rouge” would be the best example of their red side, alongside hits like “Red Flavor” and “Power Up.” However, with the swanky guitar and Wendy’s soulful high-note opening the song, there’s no question that “La Rouge” immediately enchants listeners in the opposite direction. Their harmonies draw you in while their low, whispered ad-libs in the background keep you entranced throughout the song, capturing that penultimate mature, sexier vibe that their velvet side is known and loved for.

“Pose”

“Pose” captures the lovely energetic vibe of the group’s red side, along with the quirky sound effects that are effortlessly mixed into the instrumental of the track. However, Red Velvet’s dreamy lower vocals and the self-assured lyrics afford the song a velvet vibe, which allowed it to open the velvet side of their “R to V” tour.
