The world fears a return to power of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, the controversial former left-wing president of Argentina, her successor has said. President Macri was vowing to fight on after a devastating pre-election poll.

“There is a grave problem between Kirchnerism and the world, which doesn’t trust what it is going to do,” Mr Macri said.

The conservative Mr Macri’s chances of securing a second term appeared to vanish with a landslide swing in Sunday’s primary vote to Alberto Fernández, his populist rival, whose running-mate is Mrs Kirchner.

The prospect of a return to the protectionist economic policies championed by Mrs Kirchner, 66, who was president from 2007 to 2015, has unnerved the financial markets. The Buenos Aires stock market slumped by 48
