Cheers to freedom with this Venezuelan Rum Guarapita!
On this 4th of July we celebrate the birth of America and its independency from the British Crown back in 1776. I want to toast to America, the land of the free, with this delicious Venezuelan rum guarapita… after all rum was the spirit of the ’76 American Revolution. Isn’t it cool?
Tomorrow, on the other hand, is July 5th and we celebrate the independency of Venezuela, my home country, from the Spanish Crown back in 1811.
Rum is also Venezuela’s national spirit, so let me share these appealing pictures of a guarapita: our national rum punch, our initiation concoction, the first alcoholic drink Venezuelans have.
Everybody likes and makes guarapitas. But the recipe is the best kept secret. All we know it’s made with rum, fresh fruit juice and lots of ice.
Following is my precious guarapita recipe. Cheers to freedom, to my home country where freedom is at risk, and to America: land of the free because of the brave, to which I’m always grateful for giving us shelter when we needed the most.

Venezuelan Rum Guarapita
Ingredients
- 1 0.75 lts. bottle of rum Santa Teresa Añejo
- 1 liter of passion fruit juice
- 1 liter of orange juice
- 1 ½ cup of grenadine
- 8 limes with cut in 8
- Spearmint leaves
Instructions
- In a punch bowl, mix all the ingredients with plentiful ice cubes.
- Serve in glasses with fresh ice cubes and garnish with spearmint leaves.
